From the cold mountain wind outside to a roaring fire inside, the Holly bush holds an important place in Portugal's traditional Christmas celebrations. 19th century artist Bordallo Pinheiro's whimsical, naturalistic faience works, inspired by his own art and the Arts and Crafts movement, are beloved throughout the country. His factory in Caldas da Rainha continues to use its mineral-rich local soil and the area's skilled craftsmen to create unique pieces of pottery today, with satirical portraits of current celebrities and the same "made by hand" technique.
